I like this album. The 'bad boys' of the "Decline of Western Civilization" l.p. have finally released some vinyl and it's GOOD. It's definitely the kind of album that grows on you. Besides the hardcore songs ("Let's Have a War", "I Don't Care About You" and "I Love Living in the City") there are a bunch of joke songs like "New York's Alright if you Like Saxophones" and "Beef Boloney". Funny stuff. "New York's Alright" has the best saxophone riff I've heard since "Oh Bondage Up Yours" by X-Ray Spex. There are only two things I don't like about the album. One is all the hype put on about these guys but that has more to do with the packaging than with the music itself. The other thing is that the production is much too clean -- not raw and crude like "Decline". Oh well, you can't have everything your own way. FEAR - The Record should be available in Ottawa within the next month or so and it's definitely worth buying. [The members of Fear went under the names of Philo Cramer, Lee Ving, Derf Scratch, and Spit Stix. "Fear - The Record" came out in December 1981 and the band was probably most well known outside the confines of the punk community for their appearance on Saturday Night Live on October 31, 1981 where real punks were in the studio audience and "chaos ensued". Whatever.] |
